Amylu Plohr, 29, and Michael Plohr, 24, of Duss Avenue, are each charged with endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault, and harassment.
According to a criminal complaint, the girl took a ring belonging to stepmom Amylu Plohr from a countertop about April 13 and hid the ring, refusing to tell her parents where she put the jewelry.
Police said Michael Plohr admitted last week that he spanked he girl to discipline her, but said injuries to her hand and arm were caused from a fall while fishing.
But police said the girl's 6-year-old brother gave a detailed description of what happened, telling authorities that Michael had the girl grab the edge of a table before spanking her and hitting her hands.
Police said Amylu Plohr also struck the girl in the arm and buttocks
with the paddle because she was upset about the ring.
"That's not discipline. This isn't spanking someone with your hand, this is assault with a weapon," said Ambridge Police Chief James Mann. "This goes way above and beyond discipline."
Authorities were contacted after someone at the Ambridge Area School District saw the bruises on April 13 and notified Beaver County Children and Youth Services.
