In about a week, close to 40 racers from four local counties will head to Ambridge to compete in the National Qualifying Soap Box Derby Race. Hosted by the Western Pennsylvania Soap Box Derby, the event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 7 on 14th Street in Ambridge. Champions are expected to be crowned at 3 p.m. The second annual Help Them Play Youth Fest will kick off the summer season for local children and families this Memorial Day weekend. The public is invited to attend the free, one-stop shop from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 25 at Ambridge Area High School to gather information about youth sports, camps and upcoming activities. The event will feature special guest and two-time Olympian Brianne McLaughlin, goalie of the USA Women's Hockey Team. Several students and staff were recognized Wednesday night at the Ambridge Area School Board meeting.

The traditional opening day of trout season in Pennsylvania is Saturday, April 12, when anglers will have plenty of opportunities to catch stocked or wild fish. According to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, about 3.2 million adult brook, brown and rainbow trout have been stocked in state waterways, including Big Sewickley Creek, Raccoon Lake and Bradys Run. The Easter Bunny made two stops in Baden over the weekend, first with a visit at the Baden borough building.
