"I have been committed to many of these boys from their youth days," shared Astorino.
Enire Bowens, 11th-grade power forward and center said about Astronio, "He brings a lot, and He's been my coach since I was a little kid all the way up to now, he's like family to me."
Astorino replaces Mark Jula who retired November 30 and coached for Ambridge the past seven seasons.
Lucatoro said that "timing" is the reason Astorino was hired as an interim.
"At first, it was a bit uncomfortable trying to figure out our next coach, shared Isaiah Thomas, 12th-grade point guard. "It made us feel a lot more comfortable having a familiar face as our head coach," he added.
"We have great kids in Ambridge. Some have real-life struggles who deserve opportunities to be successful, not only in basketball but most importantly in life," said Astorino. "I will do my best to work with the parents, community members, and school district to provide a positive experience on and off the court for these boys."
Astorino stated when he was a 4A All-Section player 1,000 point scorer and played college basketball at Waynesburg University. Since 1999 he has coached a variety of teams from AAU to small colleges. In recent years he coached Ambridge Travel Basketball.
Coach Astorino will coach his first conference game as head coach Tonight against Beaver at 7:30 pm.
