The competition was held Saturday at Second Baptist Church in Rochester.
Presented with questions based on grade-level, students wrote speeches and gave oratorical presentations reflecting on inspirational gains of Dr. King and Civil Rights Struggles.
The following Ambridge Area students competed: 4th-grade division: Melanie Carlin, Caison Holland, Carmine Palmieri, and Jordyn Wise of Economy Elementary; Micah Kwolek and Lily Park, of State Street Elementary.
6th grade division: Dinah Bailey, Lizzie Baronio, Sarah Haymond of Economy; Rhiannon Bosh, Rachel Guthrie, & Christopher Listorti of State Street;
10th & 11th grade division: Nadine Bosh & Nathan Bosh- AAHS; 12th grade division: Joshua Bosh-AAHS.
Two sets of five judges took turns evaluating every other grade level. Larissa Dudkiewicz of Ambridge Connection served as one of the judges.
"I would also like to thank Larissa Dudkiewicz from Ambridge Connection for volunteering to be a judge at the Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Contest this past Saturday," said Stacy Brock, a State Street Elementary teacher. "I have gone to the competition for many years and it was the first time that they had a judge from Ambridge. Thank you for representing our community."
Local Winners:
4th grade: Lily Park-1st place; Micah Kwolek and Melanie Carlin- 2nd place;
5th grade: Michael Chalupiak- 1st place; Aniah Bullie- 2nd place;
6th grade- Dinah Bailey- 1st place; Sarah Haymond- 2nd place;
10th and 11th grades: Nadine Bosh- 2nd place;
12th grade- Joshua Bosh- 2nd place.
Winners will receive their plaques and monetary awards at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet held at 5 p.m. on Jan. 18, 2015.
