Ambridge Fire Chief David Drewnowski said having more certified firefighters increases the department's chances and eligibility for increased grant funding.
The certification program measures knowledge and skills against nationally accepted professional standards to help firefighters maximize their training and experience credentials, according to the state fire commissioner's office. About 95 percent of the Ambridge department is certified.
The rigorous training is described to be similar to Navy Seal training, said Council President Mike Mikulich.
"I know a little bit about that. I went through that in the Navy many, many moons ago," he said.
Board members recognized the firefighters and their work at two recent fires.
