The sick leave is effective Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015 through June 30, 2016.
The board appointed Substitute Superintendent Dr. Joseph Dimperio to fill in during Zurchin's leave at a per diem rate of $490 per day with no benefits effective Thursday, Oct. 15 pending clearances, drug screening and TB testing.
The board also approved a settlement agreement and release between the district and Megan Mealie, assistant superintendent who has been on administrative leave since the 2014-15 school year.
In addition, Mealie's resignation was accepted effective Oct. 30, 2015.
Residents spoke out in support of Mealie and against paid sick leave for Zurchin.
"You shouldn't be paying our superintendent a leave for stress that is self-induced," said Kathleen Sabol of Ambridge. "You are wasting our money."
Lisa Waite of Economy said a lot of the board members turned their back on Mealie, which called a "sin."
Terry Mylan, Mealie's sister, also a candidate for school board said her sister believed in this district.
"Together somehow we've got to figure out how to keep caring even in the face of these trials and move forward and do what's best and hold people accountable that deserve to be held accountable for the good of Ambridge for the good of our children and for the benefit of our district."
