Zurchin was nominated by her colleague Kenneth Nickel, artistic director of the Ambridge Area School District Performing Arts Academy.
‘‘Dr. Zurchin has a vision for enriching the students’ experience in the Ambridge School District with a completely diversified arts education program in addition to a quality academic program,” Nickel said in a statement. “Last year, she created an arts academy and this year, they produced the first annual production of The Nutcracker. This production included students from various school districts and created a bond between the community and the artists.”
Because of her work, he said students who attend the arts academy also have the opportunity to receive an associate of arts degree in dance and education through the Community College of Beaver County.
Each school year, the Life Changer of the Year program receives hundreds of nominations. Ten winners are selected by a committee to receive cash awards that are split between the individual winner and their school. The national Grand Prize award is $10,000. The top three winners are also honored at a national awards ceremony.
Nominees must be full-time school employees. Award winners are selected based on the following criteria:
- A proven ability to make a beneficial difference in the lives of students
- An ability to positively add to the development of the school and/or district’s atmosphere
- A leader in his or her activities at the school and/or district level
- A proven record of excellent performance at the professional level
- A commitment to producing a nurturing atmosphere
Winners will be announced in the spring.
