Grzegorek started as a firefighter May 1, 1954 and later became fire chief in the 1980s after working his way up the department ladder.
Councilman Michael Mikulich, who asked for the moment of silence, said Grzegorek served in the capacity of firefighter, captain, lieutenant, and assistant fire chief. He spent four years as fire chief before retiring.
The department is honoring Grzegorek with a makeshift memorial at the permanent firefighter memorial.
