Each January, area Cub Scouts participate in the annual Pine Wood Derby, a local competition that involves racing cars down a track to see whose custom-made vehicle moves the fastest.

First, the scouts in first through fifth grades receive a block of wood. Then they design on paper what their car will look like. Leaders and parents help cut them into shape and the scouts finish off the cars with paint, wheels and axles.

Cindy Deschine, committee chairwoman for Baden Cub Scout Pack 405,
said the annual event brings the children closer to whomever helps them make their cars.  She said the kids have one month to create their custom cars.

On Saturday, the all-day event for Ambridge Cub Scout Pack 489 brought out 30 participants for a pack that only has 20 Cub Scout members.

Jim Ernst, assistant pack leader, said participants could include a sibling and parent race to help raise money for the yearly banquet.
PictureHudson McGeorge, fifth grader, who is a Webelos, has been participating for three years. This is his first year taking first place.
Dan Hazlett said the goal is to teach the kids sportsmanship, responsibility and respect.

Deschine said the race teaches the scouts that you shake hands, win or lose.

Each Cub Scout Pack has their own track . Ambridge's three-lane track, for instance, is five years old and cost $1,500, which was raised entirely by donations.  Local businessman Bob Miskush donated the finish line, which cost $500.

Economy Cubmaster Daniel Fisher  said " This year we acquired a new four-lane track with a new timer and automatic scoring software for the race. " and thanks the Ambridge District Sportsmen's Association, where we had the perfect venue and delicious food for the race.

Fisher added,  "Growing boys into men should always be this fun. "

First- and second-place winners will compete against first and second place winners from throughout Beaver County during the upcoming Beaver Valley District Finals. The event takes place Feb. 1 at the Boy Scouts of America Mall Show in the Beaver Valley Mall.
