Starting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, two teams, which were created by loosely dividing more than 60 elected officials based on geography, will take the field at Metro Bank Park on City Island in Harrisburg for a friendly game of softball.
Matzie, D-Ambridge, will once again play for the West team, which will be captained by Speaker of the House Sam Smith and Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa. The East team will be captained by Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi and House Minority Leader Frank Dermody.
All proceeds from the event will benefit Feeding Pennsylvania and Hunger-Free Pennsylvania. Both organizations are dedicated to relieving hunger for more than 2 million needy Pennsylvanians through their statewide network of affiliated food banks, food pantries and other hunger relief organizations. Last year’s game raise more than $60,000 for hunger-fighting initiatives.
“Over half a million children in our state may not know where their next meal is coming from,” Matzie said. “This issue should concern everyone in the state, and the Capitol All-Stars Game helps raise awareness of this troubling problem.”
Matzie, who helped the West team secure a decisive victory last year, said the friendly competition is a good opportunity to put political differences aside for a worthy cause. The game will be broadcast live on PCN.
