Patrice Shearer, owner of Yoga Edge, said the studio at 941 Merchant St., will start out with a few classes a week and slowly grow from there.
The studio will offer power yoga for advanced participants as well as beginner-level classes.
"Of course, there will be a basic kind of class where people who aren't really familiar at all with yoga will feel very comfortable coming," Shearer said.
There will be specialized workshops, such as prenatal classes and partner yoga for couples, and workout sessions geared for certain groups like gentle yoga for seniors and therapeutic, restorative classes for those with limited abilities or who have suffered an injury.
"You can hold the poses longer and you do far less in the class, but your body is still able to relax into those poses so that you could get the benefits from them," Shearer said.
Shearer has teamed up with a couple of teachers who will offer classes at various times of the day. Eventually, she hopes to offer special wellness events and other beneficial programs. Proponents say yoga, a form of exercise, helps reduce stress, builds strength and promotes relaxation, among other holistic benefits.
Shearer said she turned back to yoga after suffering a neck injury that affected her balance and nerve endings in her feet. She had been involved years before, but had gotten away from the practice.
"It really enriched my life in every way," she said. "It's an individual thing. It just slowly opened me back up and allowed me to develop the endurance and the balance -- which is a lifelong thing that you work at -- but it allowed me to get a lot of that back and I'm just very grateful for that."
After traveling to Beaver, Sewickley and Coraopolis for classes, Shearer felt there needed to be a place closer to home where people here could gather.
"I'm very excited to be widening the yoga community here in Ambridge and in the surrounding area," she said. "I'm just really looking forward to meeting people who will be coming out my way."
