More than 200 volunteers from Baden Academy Charter School, Duquesne Light Co., and organizers from KaBOOM! as well as the community, joined forces on Friday, April 28, to give area kids a new playground at Baden Academy.
The design is based on children’s drawings created at a special event in March.
The playground at Baden Academy Charter school previously did not meet the needs of all of the students.
Located on the historic grounds of the former Mt. Gallitzin Academy, this new playground provides the students and the kids of the surrounding community with a safe, accessible place to play.
The day included a kick-off ceremony, a full day of construction, music by the steel drum band at Lincoln Park Performing Arts School, and a ribbon cutting ceremony dedicating the new playground. Students and parents volunteered alongside teachers, school leaders, educators and founders, local officials, and community members.
The playground is the seventh built by Duquesne Light and KaBOOM!, a national non-profit. Since 1996, KaBOOM! has been dedicated to the bold goal of giving all kids – particularly those growing up in poverty in America – the childhood they deserve, filled with balanced and active play, so they can thrive. With its partners, KaBOOM! has built, improved and opened nearly 16,700 playgrounds, engaged more than 1 million volunteers, and served 8.5 million kids. Through this partnership, more children will have the joyful childhood they deserve.
Duquesne Light supports KaBOOM! in promoting and protecting a child’s right to active play at home, at school and in the community. A playground is more than a playground. It’s a brain-expander, friend-maker, and muscle-builder. Play is central to a child’s ability to grow into a productive adult. It can transform children from sedentary, bored and solitary to
physically, mentally and socially active.
