North Side Industrial Development Co. was awarded funding for a project involving an 8.6-acre site on 14th Street, owned by New Economy Business Park, LP. The site is being redeveloped as an indoor recreational facility that will serve both Allegheny and Beaver counties.
The development company plans to use the funds to complete an environmental assessment that includes soil sampling and testing. Once assessed, a remedial action plan will be developed in order to obtain an "Act 2 Liability Release" on the site.
The grant was awarded from the Industrial Sites Reuse Program, which provides grant and low-interest loan financing to perform environmental site assessment and remediation work at former industrial sites. Grants and loans up to $200,000 are available for environmental assessments and up to $1 million for remediation projects.
The program is open to public entities, private nonprofit economic development entities, and companies involved in reuse of former industrial land. Entities that caused or contributed to environmental contamination at the site are not eligible.
