Statement On Syrian Refugees From Congressman Rothfus, Senator Vogel, and Governor Wolf

11/17/2015

Press ReleaseWashington, D.C. – In the wake of the recent ISIS terrorist attacks in France, Lebanon, and other nations, Congressman Keith Rothfus [PA-12] called for a moratorium on the entry of Syrian refugees into the United States until security concerns are met. The Obama Administration announced in September that the U.S. would take at least 10,000 Syrian refugees over the next year. In testimony before the House Committee on Homeland Security last month, FBI Director James Comey said that the federal government does not have the ability to conduct thorough background checks on all of these refugees.

The following statement is from Congressman Keith Rothfus:

“President Obama’s assessment that these barbaric acts are merely ‘setbacks’ is mistaken. His proposed policy of accepting thousands of Syrian refugees into American towns and cities is deeply misguided and puts the American people at risk.  The safety and security of the American people is a nonnegotiable priority.  Americans need to know their elected officials are doing everything we can to prevent similar acts of terror here at home. The American people are a compassionate people and desire to aid in the humanitarian crises occurring abroad. The U.S. has been more generous in aid efforts than any other country in the world and has given $4.5 billion in humanitarian relief for those affected by the war in Syria.  Until refugees can be properly vetted, however, it would be unwise to allow them into the country.”

The following statement is from State Senator Elder Vogel Jr. facebook page:

"In the wake of the tragedy in Paris, and after hearing overwhelmingly from my constituents in the 47th Senate District, I would like to voice my full support and agreement with Senator Pat Toomey and other federally elected officials of Pennsylvania calling for an immediate halt to the relocation of any Syrian nationals into Pennsylvania.

One of our most important duties as elected officials is to ensure the safety of Pennsylvania citizens. Until much more stringent and extensive background checks are concluded, Pennsylvania must not accept any Syrians who security officials say cannot be safely screened. We simply do not know, with 100% certainty, who are legitimate refugees fleeing a war-torn country and who are terrorists that intend to do us harm.

Simply put, the safety of Pennsylvanians must come first.

It is my understanding that this relocation effort is authorized solely through federal law. It is my hope that something can be done, immediately, on the federal level to stop this relocation effort in its tracks. I applaud Senator Toomey for taking the lead on this. That being said, elected officials at the state level, in the House, Senate, and Governor Wolf, must use any legal means available to halt the resettlement of any Syrian nationals, any of whom could be connected to Islamic terrorism, into Pennsylvania."

The following statement is from Governor Tom Wolf :

Harrisburg, PA – The Office of Governor Tom Wolf released the following statement on the accepting Syrian refugees in Pennsylvania:
“While details are still emerging regarding the individuals responsible for the heinous attacks in Paris, all of those responsible committed atrocious acts and must be brought to justice. We must not lose sight of the fact that families leaving Syria are trying to escape the same violence and unimaginable terror that took place in Paris and Beirut.
“To assist the settlement of families fleeing the humanitarian crisis in Syria, the Federal Government coordinates with local charitable organizations in Pennsylvania and other states. Pennsylvania will continue working with the Federal Government to ensure that all individuals have gone through the proper screening process. Governor Wolf wants Pennsylvania to continue to build on its rich history of accepting immigrants and refugees from around the world but he is also committed to protecting Pennsylvanians and will work with the Federal Government to ensure it is taking every precaution necessary in screening those families coming into the country."
