Over 150 students at Ambridge Area High  joined in the National Student Walkout on March 14 to honor the 17 people killed in Parkland, Florida school shooting.

The walkout , organized by the group Empower,  is meant to press lawmakers to pass stricter gun laws.

Ambridge school administration released a statement prior to the event that the students expressed their intent to participate in a school walkout as an expression of support and solidarity with their peers in Florida.

“We see this as an opportunity for our students to engage in civic activism and to exercise their First Amendment rights, and we support them in this endeavor,” said Ms. Janice Zupsic, High School Principal. “Safety for our students is my main concern. If they remain on school property and gather peacefully, no disciplinary action will be taken.”

The nationwide  walkout is  both a memorial and protest.  Students walked out at 10 am and stood together on the center of the football field for 17 minutes to honor the 17  students and faculty members who were killed.

The demands, participants want Congress to:
  • Ban assault weapons
  • Require universal background checks before gun sales
  • Pass a gun violence restraining order law that would allow courts to disarm people who display warning signs of violent behavior

An important message from the Ambridge Area School District Administration:

On Wednesday, March 14, students nationwide have expressed their intent to participate in a school walkout as an expression of support and solidarity with their peers in Parkland, Fla.

The Ambridge Area School District has not been informed in advance whether our students intend to participate in this nationwide walkout. However, students who opt to participate in the walkout will not be disciplined by Administration provided they remain on campus grounds during the walkout. Should students exit our buildings to participate in the walkout, they will be closely monitored by Administrators and members of the local police, as needed, to ensure their safety.

“We see this as an opportunity for our students to engage in civic activism and to exercise their First Amendment rights, and we support them in this endeavor,” said Ms. Janice Zupsic, High School Principal. “Safety for our students is my main concern. The Ambridge Area School District is accepting nominations for the 2018 Hall of Honor.

The Hall of Honor was established to commend outstanding Ambridge Area School District alumni for their accomplishments, successes, service to others and state or national awards.

In order to be eligible for nomination, alumni must meet the following criteria:
• Nominees for the Hall of Honor must have made significant community contributing and/or career-related accomplishments. One-time distinctions or awards may be appropriate if they were given at a state or national level.
