The Bottom Dollar grocery store in Ambridge officially closed on Monday, days earlier than a previously announced closing date for Thursday.
All 66 of the company's stores have been closed following a sale to grocery chain Aldi, Inc. In November, Delhaize Group, the parent company of Bottom Dollar Food, announced the transaction would close in the first quarter of 2015.
A company spokesperson said the closing date was moved up due to the lack of inventory. About 2,200 employees across Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey are affected by lay offs.
The Ambridge Bottom Dollar grocery store opened in 2012. Ambridge officials have written a letter asking to use the site for another grocery store and the owner of the nearby Shop'n Save is offering a shuttle bus for shoppers.
